This tapestry explores a Greek myth involving the three fates and the way they spin the threads of destiny to predict mortals lives!
This particular piece explores the tale of Greek hero Meleager whose fate was tied to the log burning on the his family hearth! Three fates visit him when he is born and predict that once the flames consume the log burning on the family hearth that he will die.
Overhearing this his mother smothers the flames and hides the log, he grows up into a young man.
Then one day when on a hunt for a wild boar, who was ravaging the land, Atlanta a young huntress in his hunting party, strikes the animal with her arrows and meleager delivers the final blow. But to thank Atlanta for her help he awards her the boars hide, a sign of respect for her helping kill the animal.
But the other men of the hunt are angry at this, not liking that a woman is being honored for her help and try to hurt her. (Nothing new there, sadly)
Meleager kills the men, who happen to be his uncles (sometimes it’s his brothers it changes in each translation of the story)
Enraged his mother retrieves the hidden log and throws it into a fire, and meleager dies as the flames engulf the wood- just like the three fates predicted!
